2. Sensitive Device Permissions & How They Are Used
MyDeen requests minimal Android and iOS permissions, each strictly necessary to provide specific features. Before any sensitive permission is prompted, the app displays a prominent in-app disclosure explaining its purpose.
A. Location Permission (ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION, ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION)
- Why it is needed:
- Prayer Times: Astronomical prayer times (Fajr, Sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha) require latitude, longitude, and elevation to compute sun angles.
- Qibla Compass: Computing the great-circle bearing from your current geographic position toward the Holy Kaaba in Makkah (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E).
- Our Guarantee: Coordinate mathematics are executed on your phone via the open-source offline Adhan engine. Coordinates are never transmitted across the network, stored on remote servers, logged, or shared.
B. Notification Permission (POST_NOTIFICATIONS)
- Why it is needed: To schedule daily Adhan sound alerts and upcoming Islamic calendar date reminders.
- Our Guarantee: All notifications are scheduled locally on the device (using Android's alarm system and Apple's UNNotificationCenter). No remote push notification servers (e.g. Firebase Cloud Messaging or APNs) are used. You can disable notifications anytime in Settings.
C. Device Sensors (Magnetometer & Compass)
- Why it is needed: To point the compass needle directly toward the Qibla in real-time as you rotate your phone.
- Our Guarantee: Sensor readings are only evaluated in active memory while the Qibla screen is open and are immediately closed when navigating away.
3. Local Data Storage & User Control
All application assets and state are kept strictly in private application sandboxes:
- Quran Database: Arabic text, English/Bangla translations, and Tafsir are saved in a local SQLite file (
quran.db). - Offline Recitations: Audio files downloaded for offline listening are saved in your app directory (
quran_audio/). You can delete individual surahs or clear all audio files anytime from the Offline Downloads screen. - Personal Notes & Bookmarks: Saved within local
SharedPreferencesand SQLite.
4. Third-Party Network Requests & CDNs
MyDeen does not connect to any advertising networks, trackers, or commercial data brokers. The only network connections made are HTTPS requests to open public Islamic Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) for:
- Downloading public Quran audio recitations (
download.quranicaudio.com). - Fetching open Islamic study text and ayah timing metadata (
api.quran.com).
5. Data Retention and Deletion
Because MyDeen does not require user accounts and holds zero remote databases, you have complete and instantaneous control over your data:
- Delete Audio: Use the "Delete Audio" or "Delete all audio" buttons in the Offline Downloads screen.
- Clear All App Data: Go to your device's Settings > Apps > MyDeen > Storage > Clear Storage / Clear Data, or simply uninstall the application. All local databases, settings, and files are permanently removed immediately.
6. Children’s Privacy
MyDeen is suitable for users of all ages, including children. We do not collect any personal information from children or adults alike.
7. Security Practices
- Encryption in Transit: Any public recitation audio or study data downloaded from CDNs is transmitted via secure HTTPS (TLS 1.2+).
- Zero External Storage: Private app sandboxing prevents other apps on your device from accessing your reading notes or audio cache.
8. Changes to This Policy
If we update our privacy policy to reflect new features, the updated policy will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" timestamp.
